Central Oregon Trail Progression

Central Oregon has long been known for its buttery smooth epic XC trails; well the times are a changing. It wasn't long ago that myself and a few friends sat on the side of a butte in Central Oregon, building illegal pirate trails, wondering if we would ever be able to build legitimate freeride trails, and receive respect from our cycling peers. There has been a shift in leadership, eyes have been opened, and new blood has stepped up to the plate!
About 2 years ago, while investigating a new trail project here in Central Oregon, Nick Braun ran into two other local trail building volunteers, Seth Gehman and Dave Seeley.
Within their first few months of building and riding together, the trio realized how much they had in common, and made a decision to be more proactive in the mountain bike community. They saw that there was a need for more progressive freeride trails in the area, and that no one was stepping up to the plate to do anything about it. Many riders in the area had lots to say about what needed to be built and what sucked; but no one was being proactive in getting the approval to build legitimate freeride features.
Central Oregon has a few sweet DJ spots, but no trails with sweet TTF's(technical trail features); so the trio got to work on building their reputation as hard working, dedicated trail builders with the local bike advocacy group, Central Oregon Trail Alliance(www.cotamtb.com). During their first year of being proactive, they had helped Sam Pinner to finish up the Lair Jump Park:
Built a massive jump feature for the Wham Bam Jump Jam at the Lair for Redbull:
Adding a new member to their building crew, Ryler Sturm(www.cofreeriders.com). The close knit biking community quickly realized how dedicated these guys were to building and progressing the types of trails in Central Oregon. Shortly there after, COTA board members came to the group with the most mind shattering news! "We've got a spot for you guys to build some legitimate freeride trail and features". The only catch was we had to follow some Forest Service guidelines. In five months, we had flagged and roughed in a mile of trail and built over 200 feet of elevated wooden features:
Winter, and snow kicked us out late in December, so we moved to the lower elevation of Phil's Trailhead, to start building a bunch of log rides that a wind storm had left us on New Years Day. We built a zone of log rides right along the road to the trail head in hopes that this would introduce this type of riding to those who haven't experienced it before, hoping that when they see new TTF's on the trail, they won't be freaked out:
We have not yet received any negative feedback from the locals, and the community is still egging us on to keep building more. So kiddies, instead of sitting around complaining about what we don't have to ride, or that what we have sucks, you should get out and be more PROACTIVE! Support your local trail advocacy group, attend meetings, and make your voice heard. Those who show up, are often listened to. Talk is cheap, but hard work is priceless.

I would also like to thank Matt from Republik clothing; he has been super supportive of our group, and an all around awesome guy!!!
Hell yeah, can't wait for the spring trail building shenanigins. Nice to see the recognition for the local scene. Awesome work guys and definitely some props to Matt at Republik for all the support this past year.
Nice.. I don't even know how many hours these guys put in.. but I know it was a lot. It seemed like every week they were lighting up my email with photos of new drops, log rides and trails that they had built. So much respect for these guys they saw a need for more freeride terrain and they've stepped up and put in their time and completely changed the riding scene in Bend, Oregon. Huge props guys.
Just duck when Matt rolls trail with his "Purple Fanny Pack and Potato Gun!" Its awesome you guys gave Sam Pinner props. Very admirable indeed.
Like I would be caught dead in a purple fanny pack... it's an orange fanny pack and a purple potato gun! Purple Fanny packs are for losers.
Don't lie- its Pink! And your so jealous of my purple fanny pack that you just need to settle down with your Pina Colada Slurpee and submit to its 'AWESOM-NESS'
Damn you guys!!! This talk of 80's colored fanny packs is getting me stoked! Can't wait till 2010; by the way, I don't wear mine over my fanny, i like to wear it up front with my M.C. Hammer pants pulled over it, so my JUNK looks bigger. You should call them the Republik Unit Pack.
You beat me to the punch Nick. Matt Sweeney has a killer clothing line but is also very active in our local trail building projects and supportive of COTA. Thanks Matt. Republik rocks.

Like the design and think that I might use some of your designs to create some of my own at the new park that I am helping to build in Upstate New York.
Nice work fellas...keep pluggin away! Great to some familiar faces (Gretna, PA represent!!) on PB. Cant wait to ride it.
Keep up the great work guys. I hope to visit there soon...my old stomping ground before I moved to BC 12 years ago...great to see the building and organization happening!

I've been following your thread on MTBR. Props again Nick. I do hope to make a weekend trip out there this year... Bend's blowin' up...
I live in bend and these jumps are where my weekends consist, we need to get as much stuff here as we can

Do you guys allow outsiders to come ride your stuff?
There's 4 of us here in Far-Nor-Cal that would like to come up and ride, those log rides look awesome.

Hell yeah!!! anyone can come ride, its a public trail approved by the Forest Service. The O.D.P. trail, still has some snow on it though. I wouldn't be surprised if you see us out there working on new features.
We've got big plans for 09'.

Hahahha I've never seen a single jump so many times in one video! It looks sweet but made me laugh. Especially with angry music. Grrr, stomp that mean landing.
When the video was made, it was the first and only feature on the trail; we were just having fun sessioning the feature. Call it R&D. Plus, we're no Stephen Spielberg, we don't make videos, we build trail.
Keep up the great work guys. I already thought the trails here were among the best but they keep getting better with every feature you build. I love Bend, OR.
Thanks Kirt, hope to see ya rippin it up this summer. Would you be interested in helping with the reinvention of the Lair?
that looks sick, good job guys always good to see more trails go up and more people get exposed to our sport. and that was a sweet jump, if the rest of the trail looks anything like that, well that would be a sick trail. good job all around
Would love to see those trails ontario, some good beginner stuff for us guys with "no so great" riding skills (me)to practice and get better. Good work guys!
Keep up the good work guys! Its nice to finally see some exposure in bend too. If you need another worker I'm always here to help and I'll see you guys at the lair for the reinventing of it.
hey Nick. this is John (i helped you with those wooden features last spring at the lair. give me a hollar if you need any help. reivention of the lair? don't tease.

hey!i would loved to build so trails! but i am some wat new to it! so i was just wondering if anyone could make a vid about how to build all that good stuff!!! thanks!
All I got to say is the last year of building in Bend has been unreal. Definitely a place that seemed to be doomed to XC only. Had a blast riding the Lair and the first works of the O.D.P. and like North Shore, Central Oregon benefits from the skinnies/ramps due to the really soft soft dirt! haha. But tomorrow I load my moving truck and am heading to AZ to go live in the land of natural freeride and some killer DH. My stay in Bend was short, but at least ended on a high note from the new freeride works. Keep it up, you guys are truly doing a great job, and I still have family that lives in Bend, so when I visit I will bring my bike to go hit all the new freeride terrain.
nastynick, make sure you and your crew go by and give Kevin Risse, Risse Racing, a hardy welcome to your neighborhood. Sorry bout the hijack.
I talked to him today on the phone, I'm meeting up with Kevin next week to give him an appropriate introduction to central oregon.
NICE!
Keep up the good work - we are hopefully on verge of getting approved for area at home - Prince George, BC and know the work that goes into working with the land manager.
cheers!
